Jintanat Ananworanich, MD, Ph.D
Deputy Director

is Deputy Director of SEARCH and also holds the position of Associate Director for Therapeutics Research U.S. Military HIV Research Program, MD, USA. Dr. Jintanat has expertise in developing protocols and managing adult and pediatric HIV clinical trials involving international and national sites. She has been a trainer on HIV/AIDS issues particularly antiretroviral therapy and the treatment of children with HIV.

Nittaya Phanuphak, MD. PhD
Chief of SEARCH

is the Chief of SEARCH. She is an HIV dermatologist with extensive experience in HIV clinical trials, specializing in HIV prevention and sexual health. Dr. Nittaya has expertise in developing research protocols and managing large HIV clinical trials involving local and international collaborators and stakeholders. Dr. Nittaya has more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Mark de Souza, PhD., MPH
Senior Scientific Advisor

Mark de Souza, Ph.D, M.P.H. served as Laboratory Director (1995-2012) at the Department of Retrovirology, AFRIMS, Bangkok, Thailand where he established laboratories to support HIV surveillance and clinical trials, and achieved the first College of American Pathologists (CAP)-accredited clinical laboratory in Thailand. From 2004-2012, Dr. de Souza was also the International Laboratory Program Director for the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP). In this position, he provided oversight to five MHRP laboratories in Africa and Asia, and was responsible for achieving the first CAP-accredited laboratories in Kenya and Tanzania. He played a critical role in RV144, the first HIV preventative vaccine trial to show promising results. Dr. de Souza’s research focus has been HIV diagnostics, cellular immunology, the role of innate immunity in HIV infection and the mucosal immunology of HIV infection. He is currently employed as the Senior Science Officer with Cooper Human Systems in Nashua, New Hampshire, USA, a visiting researcher at the National AIDS Centre, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan .Dr. de Souza received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and M.P.H. in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Yale University and was a post-doctoral fellow at Yale University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he worked on Lyme disease and coronavirus receptors, respectively. He has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Nitiya Chomchey, M. Sc.
Deputy Chief of Clinical Research

is the Deputy Chief of Clinical Research. She has extensive experience with project management and is familiar with national and international regulatory issues. She also has more than 15 years of experience as a study monitor and research nurse.

Varaporn Pothipala, M.Sc.
Deputy Chief of Operations

is Deputy Chief of Operations. She is an experienced accountant and has managed several large projects at international organizations prior to joining SEARCH. She is responsible for all financial, human resources and office management.

Eugene Kroon, MD
Research Physician

is a research physician. He received his medical training at the University of Amsterdam. He is a widely-published research physician with almost two decades of clinical and research experience relating to HIV. Prior to joining SEARCH, he was the Chief Executive Officer for Thailand of a global clinical research organization.

Donn Colby, MD, MPH
Research Physician

is a research physician. He has over 12 years of experience in HIV prevention and treatment in Southeast Asia. Prior to joining SEARCH in 2013, he was Country Director of the Harvard Medical School AIDS Initiative in Vietnam (HAIVN) for 8 years. Dr. Colby has more than 20 articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

Research Physician

is a research physician at SEARCH. He is a graduate of the University of Oxford medical school. He has expertise in clinical care and support for acutely diagnosed HIV cases as well as laboratory and clinical research experience.

Thep Chalermchai, MD.
Research Physician

is a research physician at SEARCH. He is HIV specialist and medical oncologist. He also has an interest in HIV-related malignancy and cancer pathogenesis in HIV patients.

is a research nurse. She has experience in patient care and treatment in a leading private hospital. She is now responsible for neuroAIDS and HIV vaccine studies.

Peeriya Prueksakaew, BNS
Research Nurses

is a research nurse with many years of experience both in patient care and clinical research. She worked in one of the leading university hospitals in Thailand before joining SEARCH in 2011. She is now responsible for the acute HIV infection study.

is a research nurse; she has over 10 years experience of clinical nursing in both anesthetic and intensive care departments. Her research works are currently focused on neurological studies and the pathology of HIV in the gut.

is the Pediatric Program Manager. She has over twenty years of experience working with a non-governmental organization in child psychology. She has participated in developing and providing trainings on the National Psychosocial Guidelines on children and youth living with HIV. She is responsible for overall management of the Pediatric program.

Psychosocial Program Coordinator

is the Psychosocial Program Coordinator. She has over ten years of experience working with non-governmental organizations in helping children with HIV infection. She coordinates three charity programs that provide support for medical and psychosocial care for children with HIV and their families.
